Contentnea Health Greene Offers 3D Mammography

Last year Contentnea Health performed 623 mammograms – a number Contentnea Health leaders expect to increase this year.

Women now have access to the best in breast imaging at Contentnea Health.

Hologic engineers recently installed Selenia Dimensions – one of Hologic’s new equipment lines for 3D mammography imaging – at Contentnea Health Greene in Snow Hill.

3D imaging differs from 2D imaging. 2D imaging takes one image from the top of the breast and one from the side, putting all breast tissue into a single flat picture. 3D imaging moves in an arc over the breast and takes hundreds of low-dose X-ray pictures.

“A radiologist can flip from one image to the next with 3D imaging,” says Radiologic Technologist Melissa Miller. “You can think of it like flipping through the pages of a book. Radiologists get a clearer picture of the tissue inside the breast.”

Contentnea’s first patient Lynn Lux said the mammogram was easier than she thought it would be. “The hardest part was standing still and not breathing,” she said. (During a mammogram, the patient must remain still and hold her breath for about 10 seconds when the mammography unit is taking x-rays.)

“3D mammography is the standard of care in breast imaging,” says Contentnea Health CEO Melissa Torres. “Our mission is to serve our community, and our patients need the high quality, preventive care 3D mammography provides. This mammography unit helps us deliver care that gives our patients peace of mind.”
