Greene County’s only practicing physician retired in the 1960s, prompting local leaders to find a way to bring health care to Greene County residents.
Local leaders joined state and federal leaders and a group of Wilson physicians to bring Walstonburg Community Health Program (WCHP) to Greene County. WCHP then officially opened Walstonburg Community Health Center to the public on April 8, 1973 in Walstonburg, NC – a small town in northern Greene County.
Two years later, WCHP became Greene County Health Care (GCHC). The transition resulted in growth for the next 50+ years. GCHC grew from one clinic with a nurse practitioner to the system it is today – five clinics in Greene, Pitt and Pamlico counties, a school-based clinic and two medical mobile units.
In 2023, GCHC unofficially announced a transition to a new name – Contentnea Health. Contentnea Creek starts in Wilson County and meanders southeast before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean via the Neuse River and the Pamlico Sound.
Leaders said the name Contentnea Health pays tribute to the organization’s history and positions the system of community health centers for growth without limits based on geographic borders.
Today, Greene County Health Care is officially Contentnea Health.
